Health literacy of the public in the Arab countries suffers from deficiencies that have been documented in published studies and that constitute a problem in the optimal provision of care for patients at different stations of illness and management of illness.
The first of these stations is “What will you do before you visit the doctor” and the main problems at this station that we deal with in our course are the importance of consulting a physician if we suffer from any symptoms rather than googling our symptoms in search of a diagnosis and the importance of not listening to the many amateurs who claim that have magic fix-it solutions for every ailment and how to differentiate between approved evidence-based medical data and fake medical data.
Then we move to the second station where we provide education about the doctor’s visit and how to get the best out of it. Included in this part are basic information about doctors and how they diagnose diseases as this knowledge will help us partner with doctors in history taking, examination, interpreting investigations and even in the education, they provide to us about our illness.
The third station is about what we need to do and what we should not do after the doctor’s visit. It’s mainly about not trying to interpret the results of labs and X-rays before seeing our doctor and also about the best ways to get additional information after our doctor gives us a diagnosis.
Lastly, we end the course by providing basic medical knowledge about common rheumatic disorders the most important of which are rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic fever, gout, disc prolapse, fibromyalgia and osteoporosis.
